Needless to say, our Librarian, Heidi Snively, was quite happy with the upgrade.

“I am so grateful to have six new iMacs for the student research station,” she said. “The ongoing support by the PTA for the proper materials and hardware to run the library progam is so appreciated. Because our students have a well-loved school library, they have a better chance of growing up to be life-long learners and good digital citizens. The Grand View PTA understands this completely and is the perfect partner in education. The students said it best when they saw the bank of iMacs for the first time–’WOW!’”

Dear Grand View,

It is with much pride that I inform you that today Grand View Elementary School was officially selected as a “National Green Ribbon School”. This honor is only being awarded to 78 schools across the United States of America. With over 220,000 private and public schools in America this means that Grand View finds itself in the company of .0003% of all schools. I will be flying to Washington DC on June 3rd to accept this well-deserved award on behalf of our students, staff and parents who have clearly shown themselves to be worthy of the title, “Greenest School in the Nation”.

Congratulations to each of you for helping us obtain this honor.

Warm Regards,

Rhonda Steinberg

Grand View Elementary is named one of only three schools in Southern California to win the first ever National Green Ribbon Schools Award!! Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale and Longfellow Elementary School in Long Beach are the other two schools (out of 78 nationwide) to win the distinction and top honors in environmental and sustainability education.

“About five years ago we started a huge push toward making our students more environmentally conscious and we have 32 programs that my students are actively involved in,” said Rhonda Steinberg, Grandview Elementary School principal.

Some of the programs mentioned by Steinberg were the Earth Club, in which students focus their energies on protecting the environment; the Walking School Bus, a program that has parents volunteer to walk a student on a specific route to school; and the building of a Native Garden, which second through fifth grade students plant native gardens adjacent to their classrooms.

“The key to environmental education is to teach students while they are young” said Steinberg. “My kids aren’t going to throw trash on the ground and when you teach a child that as habit–it’s key…we have to teach our students that this is how we take care of our planet, otherwise there won’t be one in the future.”

“The schools taking part in this initiative help kids connect what they’re learning in science class with the world around them, allowing them to envision solutions to tomorrow’s challenges while living healthier lives today,” said Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, in a statement. “By making green living a part of everyday learning, the Green Ribbon Schools initiative is preparing our children to win the future by leading our global green energy economy.”

The DOE launched the Green Ribbon Schools initiative in the 2011-12 school year with the aim to reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable learning spaces, protect health and offer environmental education while boosting academic and community engagement.

“I think in order for the planet Earth to be around for our children’s children, they have to adopt a caring of this environment,” said Steinberg. “I think that Grand View is a great example of adopting this philosophy.”
