Good nutrition is a partner to good education. Students can buy a healthy school lunch or bring their own. A school menu is sent home in the Gator Gazette every week. A link to the menu can also be found in the right column of this website.
Lunchtime is Changing: No More Lunch Tickets
A big project the district has been working on this summer is the installation of a new electronic point of sale (cashier/POS) system. This POS system will provide parents a new, more convenient, easy and secure online prepayment service to deposit money into your child’s school meal account at any time. This service also provides parents the ability to view your child’s account balance through a web site called www.MyNutrikids.com. By having money in each child’s account prior to entering the cafeteria, we find the lunch lines move along much faster so your child has more time to eat and be with friends.
To access these services, simply log on to www.MyNutrikids.com and register your student(s). The process is simple. However you will need your child’s permanent student ID number (this is the number that appears on report cards, class schedules and most official documents you receive from the district). If you still have trouble finding the number please contact school office at (310) 546-8022.
REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM:
All students participating in the free or reduced lunch program must use their NutriKids Account. Parents must deposit a sufficient amount of money on the account to cover the cost of reduced fee of $0.40 per daily lunch. Our system will not allow a $0.40 cash payment at the register. We recommend a $10 deposit at a time, as long as your child does not purchase any items a la carte or any second meals, as they are not included in the NSLP program.
NO MORE BORROW SLIPS:
Due to abuse of borrow slips, and the huge financial loss that we have incurred in the past, effective August 27, 2008 there will be no borrow slips handed out. If your child has no lunch at lunch time, a cheese sandwich and milk will be offered to them. They will not be entitled to the lunch on the menu. They must still go to the office and pick up a “no lunch” slip.
PAYMENTS VIA CHECKS:
We are very excited to offer these new services, and are confident this new system will benefit you, your child, and our District. However, if you choose not to take advantage of the online prepayment service you may continue to make advance payments via check, which should be made payable to the MBUSD FOOD SERVICES. Please write your CHILDâ€™S FULL NAME, ID NUMBER AND SCHOOL NAME on the check.
Checks will take 48 hours to process and appear on your childâ€™s account.

Instructions from Attending Physician
You must provide the health office with written instructions from the student’s attending physician stating limitations and/or instructions for care while at school when your child:
- returns to school with a cast, crutches, wheelchair, etc.
- returns after a serious illness requiring 3 days or more absence from school, a surgical procedure, or overnight hospitalization.
- is to be excused from physical education or sports activities for more than 3 days in a row.
Taking Medicine at School
If your child is required by the doctor to take prescribed medication or over-the-counter medicines, it is necessary that you follow these steps:
- Submit a written request that the school give this assistance.
- Submit a written statement from the doctor with the method of administering, the amount, and time schedule for either the prescription or over-the-counter medicine.
- Label the prescription or over-the-counter medicine with the child’s name, dosage, frequency, doctor’s name, and the doctor’s phone number. Medicine must be in the original container.
Inhalers at School
If your child has a diagnosis of asthma, it is strongly recommended that an inhaler be kept at school for your child in the event of an emergency. Elementary students generally need adult supervision when using their inhalers, but may carry an inhaler under special circumstances and approval of the District nurse. It is recommended that these students also keep a backup inhaler in the health office. Please encourage your child to communicate with the teacher when he/she is experiencing asthma symptoms so that the medication can be administered in a timely manner.
Staying Inside for Health Reasons
Children who must stay indoors during any normal out-of-doors period must have the approval of the nurse or a signed note from the parent. Students must have a doctorâ€™s note for a physical education program release or for prolonged periods of indoor confinement.
It is often difficult for parents to know whether their children are too sick to attend school. For their own well-being, as well as for that of their classmates, below are some general guidelines.
WHEN YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR CHILD AT HOME:
- Fever: measured orally at 100°F or above
- Severe Cold Symptoms: constant cough, sneezing or nasal drainage
- Flu: fever accompanied by body aches and headache
Keep your child home until he/she has remained free of the above symptoms for a 24-hour period.
- Rashes of unknown origin require a physician’s note indicating the diagnosis and releasing your child to return to school.
- Students with Conjunctivitis (pink eye) and Strep Throat may return to school after 24 hours or more of taking physician prescribed medication.
This list is not comprehensive. If at any time your child is not well, it is advised that you keep him/her home for observation. Please keep in mind that these guidelines are to protect all students and staff members, and when your child displays the above symptoms, he/she will be sent home from school.
